UNIT TITLE:

Should Teens Be Considered INsane?

Most adults seem to think so, but ... why do teens behave so differently?  If they're just "not finished growing up," why does it take so long for OUR species to mature?  The average chimpanzee is full grown after a year - and we take 25?!

In this unit, you'll research new developments in neuroscience that show that teens evolved to go through a phase of risk-taking behavior ... but that what used to be effective behavior often gets them into trouble today.

You'll also look into the particularly strange situation in Palo Alto's Gunn High School, where students have been committing suicide at 500% of the national average ... and how the way the school and community work may be re-wiring ancient instinct to create deadly results.
